What is iLan all about?

At Av԰ Christi College, we understand that students often join the College and have differing skills and abilities.

But we believe that all children have the right to learn and develop in our school community, right from Kindergarten through to Year 12.

Going above and beyond to ensure our students are able to maximise their potential for learning, is so important to us.

Therefore, we have programs in place for those who need challenging, as well as support programs for those who may need assistance to achieve their best.

So what does that look like at the College?

Integral to the support we offer to students with learning disabilities and disorders is our unique intensive Literacy and Numeracy program (iLAN).

An example of best practice in inclusive education, the program is appreciated by both students and parents and admired by educators.

By invitation only, the iLan program at the College supports students in three areas of focus: iLiteracy, iNumeracy and iStudy.

With programs tailored to each individual student, class numbers are kept to a minimum to maximise the benefits for those involved.

What are some of the benefits of the iLan program?

The program helps to develop important skills. It provides targeted intervention in literacy and numeracy while also building resilience, problem solving and independent thinking.

Using this expanded skillset, each student is empowered to increasingly become independent, growing in confidence to transfer those skills to all subject areas.

What is included in iLiteracy, iNumeracy and iStudy?

iLiteracy

The iLiteracy session provides students with experiences designed to help them to develop their general literacy skills and to enable improved access of texts in a variety of forms.

The session focuses on:

  • Comprehension

  • Spelling improvement using a knowledge of the origins of words, which provides helpful clues to spelling conventions

  • Correct use of punctuation and grammar, including development of increased complexity and sophistication of use

  • Techniques and practice for editing written work

  • Reading strategies for fluency

  • Sentence structures – variety, clarity and detail

  • Increased competence and confidence in writing well-constructed paragraphs

  • Use of graphic organisers to assist with writing

iNumeracy

The iNumeracy session is designed to enable students to develop the confidence and skills to perform simple and familiar numeracy tasks and to develop the ability to make sense of mathematics in their personal lives.

Each lesson begins with a mental activity to develop basic skills, speed and accuracy. This is followed by explicit small group teaching of topics taught in mainstream Mathematics classes for consolidation and preparation for homework, assignments and assessments.

iStudy

The Year 7 and 8 program includes an iStudy session that encompasses study tips and techniques, organisation skills, and consolidation of learning from their main curriculum. They learn how to revise classwork efficiently, plan their homework tasks, prepare study sheets, and plan ahead for assessments.

Our iLan program has received good feedback from students, who find that being in the program has “reduced the pressure of school” and allowed them to find the joy in learning with the individual support they have.

The program is a successful initiative and a reflection of our Mission Statement – We are a Catholic community committed to empowering every learner to serve and enrich our changing world.
