Our students in the community
The Rostrum Voice of Youth heats took place recently in City Beach. There were five heats. Av Christi College had nine entries: seven juniors and two seniors. The students performed exceptionally well. The following seven students progressed through to the semi-finals which will be held on Saturday 28 May:
Jenna Riordan, Mosaia McDonald, Rachael Dellaca, Erin Martin, Ike Adesanya, Olivia Fuderer and Desiree Louis.
We wish them all the best! Unfortunately, Lauren Murphy and Emma Shine narrowly missed out on progressing to the next stage. For Lauren, it was her first inter-school competition. Emma came straight from Relay for Life, having had only three hours sleep. This dedication is very typical and reflects the commitment of their Coordinator, Mrs Noreen Stevenson.
We are grateful former students Rebekah-Anne Craggs and Sam Coten have taken up roles as Rostrum adjudicators, too. It was wonderful to hear of the strong Av presence, students and past students engaging in this significant inter-school competition.
Our music students have been busily performing at the Fremantle Eisteddfod, a competition of a very high standard. Congratulations to the Girls Choir who won the Vocal Ensemble Open; to the Celtic Band who won the Instrumental Ensemble Open; the Viva 2 Guitar who won the Under 13 Instrumental Ensemble and the Woodwind Quartet who won the Instrumental Ensemble Under 18. Along with first place individual performers Olivia Ialacci, Sofia Scaturro and Alessia Scarfo, these were impressive results overall.
There are more details in this copy of the e-News, but I take this opportunity to thank Head of Music Mr David Harries, music teachers and tutors for preparing our students, and to our talented musicians and singers – well done! These are very impressive results, so far!
These musicians will now prepare for their performances at the Annual Catholic Performing Arts Festival in August.
Recognition for the Work of Teachers
Schools have been invited to submit nominations for the National Excellence in Teaching Awards NEiTA 2016 Australian Scholarship Group Awards for Inspirational Teachers. The awards programme provides an opportunity to publicly recognise and encourage our outstanding teachers. This is the only independent national awards programme where school communities, parent associations and individual parents can nominate teachers who demonstrate effectiveness, innovation, and contribute to excellence in their profession. A total of $55,000 will be distributed to national award recipients to further their professional development, or for community relations initiatives.
ASG NEiTA Teacher Ambassador of the Year
One national award recipient will be selected to receive ASG sponsorship as the Australian representative to the International Space Av - an international gathering of gifted teachers at the US Space & Rocket Center, Alabama, USA.
Disability Inclusion Grant
One award recipient working with children with disabilities will also receive the 2016 Disability Inclusion Grant of $2000.
Nominated teachers receive a congratulatory NEiTA Certificate of Registration and become candidates for NEiTA State and National Awards. It is easy to nominate. Forms are available from the College, or may be downloaded or completed online at:

Community Events
Thank you to all the parents who attended the Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews recently, an important part of teachers providing feedback to you in support of your child s learning. On 6 May, our Heads of Year supported by many staff, hosted our mums for a Mother s Day Breakfast in the Mater Christi precinct. We wished all our mums a Happy Mother’s Day! The following day, the Board Planning Day and the Cambodia Immersion High Tea were held at the College. Along with more than 300 who attended the P and F Quiz Night last Saturday, these events and functions are all examples of the celebration of the strength of the Av community, all gathering as one to enjoy some time together. The Quiz Night has raised funds for the refurbishment of the College Library for the benefit of all students. The total amount raised is in the vicinity of $9,000.
The student community has also continued to transform. Libraries are still very relevant in schools in the 21st century, but have been reinvented to become learning hubs for communities such as our own. Opening well before school commences and closing at 5.00pm, students are able to access the hub out-of-school hours, starting with afternoon tea and then finishing homework, before they leave the College at the end of the day. The purpose of the Library has broadened with the relocation of the ICT Helpdesk into the Library, as well as the provision of ICT support for teachers and the provision of curriculum, learning and teaching resources. Makerspaces and chess games provide different types of leisure activities for students, joining those who sit in comfortable spaces to read their novels, magazines or newspapers. During the Year 7 Pastoral Period on Tuesday 17 May Class Act performed the engaging Cyberbusters performance to highlight the issues the students can be dealing with online. The two actors involved the students and demonstrated some of the many issues that can occur when cyberbullying takes hold in the cyber world and how this can have a huge effect on students every day. Class Act provided a range of strategies to help deal with cyberbullying and left the students thinking about their own behaviours.

[accordion_item title="Year 8 Scitech Brainstorm Challenge Day" accordion="accordion"]
Congratulations to Edison Foo, Thomas Nicholls and Michael Albertini.
Seven schools, almost 150 students, all gathered at Scitech to compete in several challenges and quizzes which would test their mathematics, science, engineering and teamwork skills. All students formed groups of three within their school and given lanyards which indicated their group. They were introduced to the staff running the competition in the Planetarium, and the day began.
The day started with a simple task, a physics quiz. It was simply true or false, but it did feature 42 questions. Students were required to move around Scitech, visiting each of the different stations and answering questions.
After this finished, students moved on to the next section which was a float challenge. Students needed to make a Personal Flotation Device to keep a can of beans above the water. One second was equal to one point, with a maximum of sixty points and bonus for keeping the marked x above the water. The students managed to meet all the requirements. At the end, it looked a lot like a rocket.
One of the favourite sessions, coding, followed. The tasks were simple, but a lot of complex thought processes were involved. Students needed to code a bird to fly to a worm, and then back to the nest. Students learned about else and else if commands while earning points based on teamwork and the number of levels passed.
Students took a break from all the fun and challenges, and ate lunch. Scitech provided pizza, and it was pretty good. The next part was a quiz in the planetarium, which was after watching a 40 minute long movie. It was an in depth documentary about the MWA telescopes and the vastness of space.
Near the end of the day, the final challenge began. Much like the floatation challenge, points were spent on materials, but this time to create a flying machine. Students used a helium balloon, with a bag containing paper clips. Students successfully guided a balloon through a set of rings, using only a fraction of the time required.
Finally all 7 schools, including Av Christi College, gathered at the planetarium for the presentation of the awards. There was initially an award given to the highest scorer of the physics quiz achieved a 97.6% result, which was amazing. Av students felt a bit disappointed when they didn t come in either second or third place. When Av Christi was announced as winners, students were shocked. Congratulations to the here winning students, Edison Foo, Thomas Nicholls and Michael Albertini who made up the team Untitled. Thank you to Ms Stevens for accompanying the students to Scitech.

On the 9th of May, a group of Years 11 and 12 students attended a conference run primarily by Julie Arliss, who talked about a range of questions throughout the day, ending with a debate on, Can the existence of God be verified?
The conference was held at St. Hilda s Anglican School for girls, with a large attendance rate by students from all over Perth, as well as students from as far as Bunbury. Julie Arliss commenced the day with the question, What is knowledge? How do I know I have it?
She demonstrated the understanding of three types of knowledge: practical knowledge, knowledge by acquaintance, and factual knowledge, and she also expressed the four sources of knowledge, consecutively being experience, reason, innate ideas and revelation.
Knowledge, as some may know, can be separated in two main areas: Empiricism, and Rationalism, where empiricism is to do with knowledge that is tied down by our five senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch, opposed to rationalism being all knowledge that starts with the mind. An inspiring comment Julie made, was the idea that to exist is to be perceived, thus, for us to exist, we must be perceived by God.
Another question was What do I believe? which was discussed by Jeffrey Hodges. He spoke about how beliefs are boundaries between you and not you, and that your personality is your set of beliefs. Your beliefs are based off emotional responses, and are choices which should reflect your potential. You can change your beliefs, and through changing them, you re empowered to improve and change. Julie then came on stage, and spoke on the topic Who am I? What can I hope for? through which she explained how thoughts and desires change over time. She gave some insightful commentary on the idea that the self is an illusion generated by the brain, and that language drives all perceptions. She also gave us the questions, of where do we go when we are asleep? Where do we go when we are under anaesthetic? Where do we go when we die? Is it the same place?. Descartes called the thinking thing a non-extended thinking self.
She spoke about how mind is the ultimate reality, and if we lose our memory, do we still have a self? Lastly, before the debate, she spoke about morality, of how moral value doesn t always lead to factual knowledge, and how it s reducible to emotional reactions. Moral value is found in doing, not just being. It is not our abilities that show what we truly are. It s our choices.. At the end of the day, Jeff and Julie had a debate, and at the conclusion, students were able to stand up and state their opinions on what was said, and how the debate could be improved.
It was an amazing conference, and despite all the heavy thinking involved, we couldn t have had a better day!

The Mastermind ATAR Revision July courses are an intensive exam preparation program for ATAR students commencing Term Three and heading towards their final exams. Av students regularly give me positive feedback about these courses, hence I am comfortable recommending them in our eNews. The July Revision Program last year reported an average approval rating of 94.1% per subject.
There are classes for both Middle and Senior School students, including five-hour programs in Study Skills and Essay Writing.
Mastermind would like to extend to all Av Christi students a discount into the program which reduces the cost per subject to just $200.

With 34 confirmed participants in the 2016 Cambodia Immersion Programme, we are working hard to fundraise and plan for the trip. With a great mix of students, parents and staff, the group has been working hard on a number of fundraising events: car wash (raising $1138), staff raffles ($1200) and the Mother s Day High Tea ($2300). This awesome effort cannot happen without the kind donations, time, food and help offered by the Av community, and we cannot thank enough all who have assisted.
This Term sees the introduction of the wine fundraiser with Swings & Roundabouts, and also the Pasta fundraiser. The Lenzarini Bros from Golden Ravioli, Romany House in Fitzgerald Street Perth have kindly accepted to assist in our fundraising efforts towards the Cambodian Immersion. In the 1950 s four Italian brothers set out on a journey: a journey that would take them away from their homeland to a new home, Australia. The brothers opened the now famous Romany Restaurant in 1958 and in 1964 introduced their own range of pasta to the public of Perth, and so, Golden Ravioli was born!

Dance Company
Congratulations to the 92 students who were selected for our elite dance company program of 2016. We had 130 students audition for a place in the company, and there was fierce competition for the limited places. We would like to congratulate ALL student that auditioned and if you were unlucky to secure a place this year, please try out next year.
The dancers have already begun rehearsal and have been working extremely hard on creating a dance for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival which will be held in third term. It is an exciting opportunity for these students to learn some advance chorography and develop their technical dance skills.

Av Christi Musicians at the 2016 Fremantle Eisteddfod
The Fremantle Eisteddfod was held over the past 2 weeks and Av Christi College had a large number of very talented students entering in solo, duet and College ensemble performances.
We are delighted to announce that over 140 students (a record number) represented the College and they all performed outstanding well.
The standard of the performance of other schools was extremely high and it was a wonderful opportunity for our students to go up against some of the best in the Perth region.
Our performances overall were extremely well regarded by the adjudicators, and they commented in numerous reports on our professionalism and the high calibre of musicianship that we displayed.
Special thanks go out to our very talented music staff and tutors for all the additional hours given in preparation for the Eisteddfod.

College Music night will be on the Monday 20th June 2016, featuring the best and brightest of the Av Christi College musicians and ensembles. Further details to come, tickets will be sale very shortly.
New Zealand Tour
Student participating in the international music festival in Rotorua New Zealand, will depart at the end of this term.
We are taking representative for College Choir, Jazz Band, Celtic Band and Woodwind Band. We hope to represent that college to the best of our abilities and come home with the gold medals in each categories.

[accordion_item title="Parents and Friends - Quiz Night 2016 Thanks!" accordion="accordion"]
Thank you so much to everyone who attended the biannual quiz night last Saturday. It was an evening of prizes, brain teasers, puzzles and conundrums– the biggest of which was why the Misters Rathman and Allen thought they were attending a speed dating evening. It was also an evening of music and karaoke magnificently supplied by Mr David Harries and his students Mitchell Garland, Corran O’Brien, Marcus Wong, Angelo Ravina, Thomas Byrne, Joshua and James Kang
It is true when they say “if you build it, they will come” with the number of donations that came pouring in from the local community in the days leading up to the event. This would not have happened without our guru donation go-getters Suzanne Bailey and Cathy Hebbs. We do not yet have a final figure, but at the time of writing this we are looking at a record amount raised of $9,000 which will go towards the cost of the re-imaging of our College library.
Other key helpers were Sue Rauh who put the game packs together and Laura Ellement and her husband Dave and Andrew Hill who manned the bar and the Silent Auctions.
Thanks also to Andrea Wand and to students Tom Hill, Nathan Cavaney, and Cassandra Rauh who carried out all the scoring and to Mr Yun Chen for setting up all the AV for the evening.
Congratulations to the team Nights of Knights (pictured right) who won for best dressed table and to Team Liquorice Allsorts who came first in the Quiz Night overall.

The Technology and Enterprise Learning Area now has a Laser Cutting Machine
We are sincerely appreciative of our Parents and Friends Committee at Av who have generously provided the funding for our laser cutting machine.
Computer Aided Design and Manufacture will now become an integral part of our curriculum in all years and in all aspects of Materials Technology.
The machine allows us to improve the quality of our Teaching and Learning Experiences across a range of skill areas. We are able to experience modern production methods with the laser cutter as it will quickly and accurately cut and engrave a range of timbers, plastics, fabric textiles and some metals.
Our Technology and Enterprise Laser Cutter Master Class is now progressing well. Currently we are working collaboratively with students in Av Christi Maker Space whilst also being involved in the design and manufacture of a range of pieces to be displayed at the Arts Learning Area and the Technology and Enterprise Learning Area Exhibition to be held in September.
In coming weeks, pieces of work completed by students will be displayed in the staff room and if anyone is interested and would like to see the equipment in action please drop by during the master class on Tuesday and Thursday during lunch.

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Student Body and the Av Christi College Community on the great result of our Term One Project Compassion fundraising drive. From all the House collections plus Rice Day we raised $5,799.50! It is a wonderful example of how we can Bee Compassionate to those in need beyond our own community.
Thank you to everyone for your great efforts. The funds will now be sent to Caritas Australia for use in their many projects both in Australia and overseas.

The Catholic Education Office of WA has published a set of iTunes U courses for Year 7 Science Australian Curriculum.
The courses were compiled by a team of talented teachers from CCC, Mercedes and Holy Cross under the banner of the Content Coalition Team. With the support of Michelle Lloyd (Catholic Education Office, Perth) and the Western Australian Apple Education Team.
Sally Farrington, Filipa Carvalho and Yvette Pearce (Science Team CCC) were the driving forces behind the Av Christi College contribution which developed the four Year 7 Science Courses.

Av Christi College received renewed statute as a 2016 - 2017 Apple Distinguished School for its leadership in integrating technology into the learning environment. The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence, and that demonstrate exemplary learning environments. Av have developed a multi touch iBook giving the reader an insight into this exciting journey. This has now been published on the iBooks Store.

[accordion_item title="Space Av Video 2016" accordion="accordion"]
A team of 13 Av Christi College students and some parents and teachers (along with 10 John XXIII students and parents/teachers) recently returned from a Space Av Tour to America. An trip saw the team spending the first 5 days at NASA Av. The group experienced many different activities along the way including scuba diving (where we they to launch rockets under water and shoot balls into hoops), rock climbing, the pamper pole and other various team working activities. The group experienced engineering activities, (such as building a space suit for an apple, building miniature rockets and constructing Mars rovers out of lego). Other interesting activities also included having a Russian language and history class. As well as completing three practice space missions and the subsequent training, these roles helped improve leadership, listening and organisational skills, as well improving the students ability to deal with stress under pressure.
After NASA Space Av the group visited the Civil Rights Museum before flying out to Orlando. In Orlando they visited the Kennedy Space Centre, the iFly experience (which is basically sky diving indoors), had a boat ride on the everglades, and went to Universal Studios for a day.
The last couple of days were spent in San Fransisco where they walked the Golden Gate Bridge, visited the exploratorium, caught a boat ride to Alcatraz, visited google, Intel, the Computer History Museum and the NIF (National Ignition Facility).

Muresk Institute Open Day
The Open Day will showcase new techniques, technologies and careers in the agricultural sector. Defence Force Gap Year
The ADF Gap Year programme is an excellent way for your students to experience military life and to gain a greater understanding of what's involved. On completion they can continue serving in the Navy, Army or Air Force, or offer the skills and experience they have acquired to an alternative career path.
In 2017 there are 11 roles to choose from ranging from admin to artillery, and flight crew to logistics. Places are strictly limited and will only be open for a limited time so make sure your students are informed of this opportunity.

Kirsty Mouttet (CLASS OF 2014)
Kirsty graduated in 2014 and went on to study Engineering at Curtin University. She was an exceptionally talented and academic young lady. She has continued to pursue her artistic talent showcasing her art work in a number of local exhibitions. In 2014 she achieved 100% for her production piece at WACE and won a swag of awards representing the College in external Art Exhibitions. Kirsty has continued her passion for art. Aside from her commitment to her university studies she continues to win Art awards. To name one, The 2016 Vasse Art Award for Under 25s and the Peoples Choice Award.

Parent Presentation- Cyber Safety

During Term Two, students from Years 7, 9 and 11, will be participating in a workshop with Paul during their pastoral periods. Parents are invited to listen to attend a much more advanced and knowledgeable presentation.
The information presented is very easy to follow and Paul s presentation style ensures you will leave having learnt a massive amount in only a short time, without the fear of having to know much about computers.
Paul s main goal is to help parents better understand the networks and systems our teens are using and to help them grow online with their kids.
Communication is ultimately the key, however Paul also offers some great tips and hints to help you maintain your sanity and peace of mind that your kids are doing what is expected of them.
Each presentation lasts for approximately 90 minutes, after which a comprehensive question and answer session is held for those who would like more information.
The sessions are very interactive and at times can be fun and enlightening.
