An Evening with Rotarians
On the evening of Tuesday 6th October, the Rotary Club of Booragoon hosted the first of the heats in the 4 Way Test Public Speaking Competition for 2018. This Competition brings together Year 10 students to speak on a topic of their choice in which they need to relate to Rotary’s 4 Way Test. AvÐÔ°® Christi College was fortunate to enter four students in the competition this year: Isabella Cuocci, Mosaia McDonald, Konrad Rucki and Sophie Steel.
Rotarians use the 4 Way Test as a guide for their dealings in business. The questions they ask themselves are:
. Is it the truth?
. Is it fair to all concerned?
. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
The aim is to promote to young people the ideals and ethical values of Rotary by drawing attention to the wide applications and implications of the 4 Way Test.
After a delicious dinner at the Dome Café in Mount Pleasant, the students held their audience spellbound with the delivery of their persuasive speeches. Isabella presented her ideas about the urgent need to address gender inequality in our world; Mosaia discussed the complex issues related to juveniles in detention, whilst Konrad spoke about the necessity for America to accept more Syrian refugees, and Sophie convinced the audience that the objectification of women is both immoral and does not benefit them or the rest of society.
All four students incorporated the 4 Way Test into their speeches superbly. The adjudicators commended each student on the outstanding quality of their speech, both in content and delivery.
Congratulations to Sophie Steel who won the evening’s competition. Sophie will now progress through to the next level of the competition which will take place at a later date.
These students can be very proud of the way in which they participated and represented the College. Thank you to parents for their ongoing support of their children in this activity. On behalf of the College, I would also like to extend my gratitude to John Tuffin and to the Rotary Club of Booragoon, for their generous sponsorship of our students.
